Project Description
Serbia at Expo Dubai 2020
Sending a global message about the potential of innovative and modern Serbia at the world’s largest tech and innovation event.
Project Description
Serbia’s participation at Dubai Expo 2020 was driven by the goal of showcasing a positive image of an innovative and modern Serbia, as well as developing business networks, creating opportunities for the Serbian business community and presenting the investment potential of Serbia.
The tagline, Serbia Creates Ideas – Inspired by the past, we are shaping the future, outlined the theme of the presentation.
We were demonstrating that the Serbia of today is a natural successor of the Vinča civilization and its pioneering members that changed the course of world history, with contemporary scientists, innovators and talents continuing the revolutionary tradition and changing the face of the world as we know it with their ideas and creativity. We are showing the world why Serbia is known as the “Silicon Valley of the Balkans”, what makes it a European leader in direct investment and eGovernment, and how come our country is the proud host of a European Center of Excellence for ICT solutions in agriculture.
Serbia National Pavilion
The centerpoint of Serbia’s World Expo presentation will be the National Pavilion, an architectural delight of 2.000 square meters and three floors, which will be located in the Mobility District of the exhibition. This is Serbia’s biggest pavilion at any World Expo thus far. The concept behind the design is a one-of-a-kind time capsule that connects the heritage of the innovative Vinča culture with the digitally advanced Serbia of today.
The pavilion will be fully digitalized and will allow visitors to travel through both time and space as they experience the richness of Serbia and its history in VR.
Serbia Creates Ideas Zone (ground floor) Sales zone for creative Serbian products – digital brochures, programs, and a presentation of the Serbian business landscape.
The strategy includes a series of business meetings, presentations, and conferences, as well as participation in official EXPO forums and the Serbian international business forums. Apart from activity taking place in the Serbian Pavilion, the Serbian business community will have the Dubai South business district at their disposal.
Serbia Creates Opportunities Zone: BUSINESS AREA (1st floor) – Connectable conference rooms and meeting rooms of changeable size and capacity that can be booked for meetings, conferences, and presentations.
The second floor of the National Pavilion is a gallery space divided into two areas: Serbia Creates Inspiration and Serbia Creates Experiences.
Serbia Creates Experiences Zone: GENERAL AREA (2nd floor) – Zone dedicated to Serbia’s tourism offer and event promotion, available for VR presentations of innovations, talents, artists, cities, tourist destinations, museums, important events etc.
The Serbia Creates Experiences zone will feature VR exhibitions of Serbian art, science, history and museums. Through virtual reality and digital avatars, visitors will be able to experience the explosion of ideas and creativity of the Vinča culture, as well as the groundbreaking ideas of contemporary Serbian minds. The exhibition’s most important presentations will showcase the Vinča culture, scientists Nikola Tesla, Mihajlo Pupin, and Milutin Milanković, The National Museum of Serbia, Serbian technologies, as well as Serbian tourism gems.
The Serbia Creates Inspiration zone will feature a standing exhibition throughout the six-month Dubai Expo 2020. The exhibition connects the prehistoric Vinča culture with the dynamic society and economy of today’s Serbia. This interactive exhibition will cover six major topics: Trade and Commerce; Community and Co-Existence; Production and Technology; Creativity and Arts; Education; Food and Agriculture.
An Exhibition of Human Brilliance
The first World Expo was held in 1851 in London, and has been taking place every five years ever since. It is a spectacle of excellence that connects nations and promotes science and innovation, while attempting to bring their real-world applications in industry, architecture, and art closer to the general public. It is a world gathering that sets the vision for our global future and a place where new world heritage is being created.
It was at previous World Expo editions that some of humanity’s greatest inventions were first unveiled: the steam engine, Tesla’s alternating-current power system, the first phone and computer… It was also where the world’s most fascinating buildings were first showcased, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Atomium building in Brussels.

Dubai World Expo
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dubai World Expo planned for 2020-21 took place between October 2021 and March 2022. The expo theme, Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, as well as the different thematic districts – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability – are a testament of the expo’s dedication to showcasing the most innovative and most advanced technological solutions that have emerged as a response to the current challenges humanity is facing.
This was the first ever World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region. It is also the first global event to take place after the coronavirus pandemic.
